And in superhero news…’Spider-Man 4’

Bruce Campbell might have a shot at a larger role in the new Spider-Man film.

According to MTV who interviewed director Sam Raimi recently, Campbell a frequent Raimi collaborator could potentially have a larger role in the next Spider-Man film.  Raimi said:

“I promised [Bruce] we would write something because I really love putting him in the pictures.  I promised him a good, meaty role.”

Bruce Campbell has cameoed in every Spider-Man film to date, in fact has been in every Sam Raimi film to date.

In the first film he played the wrestling match MC who changed Parker’s intended Human Spider name into the iconic Spider-Man.  In the second Spidey film he played the pompous theatre usher who did not allow Peter into Mary Jane’s play late which in turn pained Mary Jane and made her not trust Parker.  Finally, in the third film he played the maitre’d at a French restaraunt who intended to help Parker propose to the love of his life, Mary Jane.

However, none of his roles in the superhero franchise have lasted longer than a few minutes at most, but perhaps fourth times the charm.

As of right now this is all speculation but maybe Campbell could be stepping into as ‘meaty’ of a role as a Spidey villain.

The one that has been brought up the most is special effects guru Quentin Beck who eventually becomes Mysterio, master of illusion.

Please be true.

That is all I have to say to this rumor/speculation.  Campbell is one of those things that are constant in the films that make it a solid franchise and makes one forget all about emo-Spidey and corny musical moments.

I have only seen Beck in the ’90s cartoon series and countless video games but Campbell seems like the perfect fit for the character.

Campbell is the perfect amount of sleaze ball, smart alleck and general bad ass that Beck/ Mysterio needs.

Do not make me go through the crushing realization that this will not happen much like you did with Haley being Sinestro, Hollywood!

We won’t know for sure until more news is released or perhaps it will be hinted at that Campbell might step into a villain role by the fifth film.  We’ll all know when the fourth Spidey film hits theatres May 5, 2011.

Currently watching Batman Begins, because yesterday I watched all the Spider-Man films so now it’s time for some Bats.  Up next: The Dark Knight

Movie Review: “Where the Wild Things Are”

To say the Where the Wild Things Are is strictly a kids movie is like saying The Dark Knight is a film for the whole family.

However, to say Wild Things is a vision of beautiful characters, direction and setting is truth.

I went into Wild Things knowing what I was getting into.  This would be a dark childrens book adaptation by the man who directed Being John Malkovich (not a kids movie)I expected nothing but pure brilliance.

I got it.

However, the stereotypical “white trash” family and mountains of children surrounding my friends and I expected a fun kids flick with some furry monsters.

Sorry folks, but Cookie Monster wasn’t present for this film and Elmo was in Grouchland at the time so Carol and K.W. took over.

Parents expected to enter a world of wonderment and happiness with their children but I think those parents realized that a true kids movie doesn’t have singing animals, princesses, princes and tangible dragon-like villains but rather much darker villains, our emotions.

A real childrens movie explores issues like sibling rivalry, jealousy, greed, injury, anger, imagination, pride and betrayal.

You’d think I was describing the latest Oliver Stone film but no Dubya or Gekko were not present in this flick.

There were only some spectacular furry monsters and one outstanding child actor were around to enjoy this Wild Rumpus.

Where the Wild Things Are follows a young boy, Max (Max Records) as he suffers in the real world and faces off with his distant sister’s friends, fights with his mother, bites her and runs away from home.

From there he discovers a boat that sails him to a new land which holds mighty beasts including Carol (James Gandolfini, The Sopranos), a violent Wild Thing.  Max tells a tale to the monsters to save his own life and the Wild Things are so impressed they make him their king.

Max rules his new kingdom with Carol but has issues as he must take over the role of parent rather than child while his ”children” rough house, throw words around harshly and use violence like it’s nothing.

The story of Max and the Wild Things paralells Max’s story in the beginning beautifully.

Max comes to a realization in the end that maybe his attitude should change but he still doesn’t lose his love for fun and excitement as he howls into the night on his run home.

There is so much more to this story, but I’d rather not give away too much.  It has a beautiful plot that counters Max’s original plot perfectly.  The film is so deep in theme and story that it truly is like nothing ever seen before in a movie starring children.

The film technically is wonderous, the question might be where the $100 million spent on the film went but whatever it was spent on, it works.  The Wild Things are breathtaking and the sets are dark and creepy but the creatures create a beauty between each tree.

The acting is superb especially Max and the Wild Things.  Gandolfini does a great job as Max’s confidant and friend Carol.  However, my favorite of the Wild Things has to be Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine) as Alexander the awkward, sulking Wild Thing.  There are also great performances from Catherine O’ Hara, Forest Whittaker, Chris Cooper, Lauren Ambrose and Catherine Keener.

The direction is unmistakably Jonze’s and he is at his best.  Jonze truly has a strong hold on what Maurice Sendak, author of the book by the same name, intended for his story of a wild little boy in a fantastical new world.

Jonze flawlessly transitions the real world to the wild world and holds a strong drama throughout amongst these Wild Things.

The production design and music are also notable and have been mentioned ever since the trailer was first released.  The film itself lives up to those original two minutes and thirty second of wonderment and then some.

This film is a truly amazing voyage and no matter what age you are it should be seen.

However, I recommend you know what you are getting into because if you expect a run of the mill Disney type children’s tale, you are in the wrong theatre but if you are up for a tale that really shows childhood like it is then please join Max and let the Wild Rumpus begin!

Where the Wild Things Are is currently showing at Rivoli Theatres.

Reboot this! ‘Scary Movie 5’

It’s true the Scary Movie franchise will be adding a fifth film to its repertoire of mediocre films.  The Weinstein Company plans to reboot the franchise with its fifth film by starting a new story and introducing new characters.

The last film to be released in the franchise, Scary Movie 4 made $180 million and was moderately critically successful.  However, the films following the Scary Movie films including Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie were simply only financially successful.  No surprise.

The Scary Movie films most redeeming quality has to be the use of actress Anna Faris.  Faris has recently been successful as a solo act though with films like House Bunny among others.

The assumption is that Faris will more than likely not return which is unfortunate. However, I’m interested to see what the Weinsteins could do with another Scary Movie film seeing as it is there best franchise of the Fill in the Blank Movie types.  Faris said to Fangoria recently,

“Everyone wants to know if there will be a fifth ‘Scary Movie’ and I really have no answer.”

So either she is not involved or there has not been a lot of work done before this announcement.

The film more than likely will not be released until the planned release of another sequel, Scream 4.

With great power comes great responsibility.
Uncle Ben Spider-Man
‘A-Team’ is not going campy

Honestly, I don’t know much about The A-Team besides that it starred the gold chain enthusiast Mr. T and that they could not hit a single thing when they tried to shoot.

However, I am excited for the film adaptation of the former ’80s TV series.  I have some background with the film that I really cannot release but this movie really has a lot of potential based on plot, cast including both Bradley Cooper (The Hangover,) Sharlto Copley (District 9) and Liam Neeson (Taken.)

There have been a few pictures released recently of the team on set and they’re looking pretty great so far.  However, the downer of the film thus far is the fact that Jessica Biel (“terrible movies”) is involved.  Either way Biel did provide some interesting information regarding the film and its lack of campiness.  I can dig it!

Biel is set to play a former love interest of one of the A-Teamers in the film.  MTV spoke with Biel who said,

“I think it will be a little bit similar here and there, but we really have our own tone going on. It’s a little bit less campy, it’s less campy than the actual show and a little bit more serious action, and like fighting sequences and um, but still with lots of humor.”

Though she might be the least exciting part of The A-Team so far.  She makes some great comments and strengthens my faith in this film which could be more male Charlies Angels than Bewitched or even Starsky and Hutch

The A-Team will be released June 11, 2010.  Biel can next be see…heard in Planet 51 to be released Nov. 20.

Box Office Results: October 16th - 18th

People went wild for Where the Wild Things Are this weekend and it wasn’t really a surprise.  The film made $32.6 million and actually provided this October weekend with a pretty solid intake.

The past few weeks have actually been great in terms of box office intake with films like Toy Story 1/2, Wild Things and Couples Retreat.  In October usually films don’t break the $30 million mark but so far already two have done so.

It’s been a better month for movies both critically and financially than it usually is.

The film according to some and I am in agreement, was still not the financial success it needed to be.  The film was made for $100 million and one might ask where all of that money went, which I did do during the whole movie, because the sets weren’t terribly elaborate, the costumes were really cool and the CGI faces were beautiful but where did the money go Spike Jonze?

There are films that do way more than that for far less money so I feel that Warner Brothers shouldn’t have let Jonze dig in the piggy bank too much and kept him on a lower budget.

The second place film for the weekend was Law Abiding Citizen starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler.  The film raked in $21 million for the weekend which is not a great amount for the former 300 star but a pretty substantial intake considering its critical acceptance.

The other new release for the week was The Stepfather and that took in $11.5 million which is not the best but considering the subject manner, the stars and the overall reception of the film, it was good.

The real bummer for the weekend had to be the fact that Toy Story 1/2 dropped its audience by 61% so it might make Disney reconsider releasing older films with the 3D format but I still believe it’s a necessary film event.

The major win for the weekend had to be the fact that Paranormal Activity jumped up to one of the top spots for the weekend with a large increase from $7 million to nearly $20 million.

1) Where the Wild Things Are - $32.6 million

2) Law Abiding Citizen - $21 million

3) Paranormal Activity - $19.6

4) Couples Retreat - $17.2 million

5) The Stepfather - $11.5

6) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - $8 million

7) Zombieland - $7.6 million

8) Toy Story/ Toy Story 2 - $3 million

9) Surrogates - $1.9 million

10) The Invention of Lying - $1.9 million

Twilight Update: Lucy has been cast for ‘Eclipse’

Kirsten Prout has been cast as Lucy in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Let the selling out continue as I post yet another Twilight story.

However, my selling out might not be such a bad thing now, because dare I say it I liked the first film (which I recently watched all the way through.)

Sure, the acting was awful but the story was pretty solid and some of the action was pretty intense and I am proud to say I look forward to seeing the new film, New Moon

It’s got more going for it including a better director and solid actors stepping in.

Anywho, on to the news of Kirsten Prout being cast as Lucy in Twilight Saga Eclipse.  The story was actually broken on E! following my viewing of the first film this Saturday.  In the film/book:

Lucy works with another vampire named Maria (being played by Catalina Sandino Moreno) to build a vampire army.

Prout is not particularly well known but has been in and out of television and film since she was eight.

She has starred in Stargate SG-1 and the film Elektra.  She has also been a regular on the show Kyle XY but her role in Eclipse will probably be her largest and from here on most well known to date.

Welcome to the family Prout and I’m sure we’ll be seeing you fly to top of the IMDB Star Meter when Eclipse is released June 30 2010 and when New Moon is released Nov. 20, 2009.

And in other, other superhero news…’Thor’

Well, I may have jumped the gun on whining about superhero movie news because once you get a bit of bad news, suddenly the good news pours.  This time we’re talking about the film adapatation of the comic book hero, Thor and potential casting news.

According to Ain’t It Cool News the German actor Matthias Schweighofer (Valkyrie) told the German GQ Magazine that he might be considered for a role in Thor.  However, Schweighofer is not nearly the big news in this story.

Schweighofer has said that Jude Law and the Taxi Driver himself Robert De Niro are also up for roles in the epic Norse god film.

Up for roles, are the wrong words because Kenneth Branagh director of the film would be priveleged to have these top notch talents at his disposal for a superhero film.

The confusion with this casting news is the fact that perhaps Schweighofer wasn’t talking about starring with them in Thor but rather he’d be joining the ranks of these actors if he were in Thor because Branagh has directed Law in Sleuth and De Niro was directed in Frankenstein.  Sadly this seems far more likely than Law and De Niro being in the film but like Haley as Sinestro or a Magneto film, one can hope.

It would be great to see De Niro return to form in a superhero film much like Rourke will be doing in his follow up to The Wrestler, Iron Man 2.  Law has also been considered for previous roles in plenty of superhero films including Watchmen so it’d be great to see the phenomenal British actor throw down some real power in a superhero film.

As of right now Thor is cast as follows.  Thor will be played by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston will play Thor’s enemy Loki.Natalie Portman is set to play Thor’s human love interest Jane Foster and Jaimie Alexander is Sif, a warrior and another love interest of Thor’s.

Colm Feore and Stellan Skarsgard have also been added to the cast but all is known is that Feore will play a villain. Finally, Samuel L. Jackson who I believe will be crowned the king of superheroes next year will play Nick Fury to go with his nine picture deal.

Karl Urban Treks up sequel news

Karl Urban was part of one the best ensemble science fiction casts in the history of film with his part as Doctor Hank McCoy in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.

The sequel to the multi-million dollar grossing film would certainly not be the same without McCoy back along for the ride so it is good to hear that Urban is talking up the potential sequel.

Collider who spoke with Earle Haley about the Sinestro rumors also spoke with Urban about the sequel to Star Trek and his role in the new film Priest starring Paul Bettany.

Urban said this about the potential Trek sequel, “It would be great to have another Star Trek out for 2011.”

As of right now the film is being written by the original scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and is expected to be finished in December.  Urban really does not know anything more than that.

No one has officially signed on for the film but it can be expected after the critical and financial success Paramount will do all they can to get everyone from Chris Pine (Kirk) to J.J. Abrams back on board.

Urban’s other project Priest he said will be a

“really cool post-apocalyptic sci-fi vampire western.”

In Priest Paul Bettany stars as Ivan Isaacs, a priest who defies the church by hunting down a group of vampires who’ve kidnapped his niece.

Priest is based on a Korean comic series by Hyung Min-Woo and is directed by Scott Stewart.  Priest will be released Oct. 10, 2010.  Urban can next be seen in And Soon the Darkness in 2010.

And in other superhero movie news…’Magneto’

Well, it has just been a bummer of a weekend in terms of superhero movie news.

First Jackie Earle Haley debunks the Sinestro rumors, next the boy scout, Superman is set to star in the Green Lantern film…lame!  Now this news.

Empire reports that the planned X-Men Origins: Magneto picture will not be happening any time soon.

I may be one of the few who thinks this is sad news but I guess I really want to see a superhero film that takes on a big issue and histroical impact like WWII.  It also appears that this may be our only chance because there haven’t been any rumors to debunk the theory that Captain America will be set in modern day.

According to the previous X-Men films producer, Lauren Shuler Donner:

“David Goyer has written a brilliant script. It starts in the concentration camps and has Magneto coming out of there. But you know, I’m not sure that film is going to be made… The studio has a wealth of potential stories, and they have to stand back and decide which ones to make. And Magneto, I think, is at the back of the queue. Maybe it’ll get made in five years - who knows?”

Gah…so lame.  A concentration camp story of Magneto would be epic, imagine if Magneto took down part of the Nazi regime.  Oh man, that’d be cool.

After all one of the best scenes in all the films has to be the young Magneto tearing a fence down with his powers after being torn from his mothers arms in a concentration camp.

However, I suppose an old man with powers over metal isn’t quite as marketable as a stud of a man with metal claws but one can hope that Fox gets wise and produces a potentially dramatic super hero piece or for that matter super villain.

Until that day one can just hope they don’t screw up the next Wolverine film, the Deadpool spin-off or the fourth X-Men film.  Please get wise Fox, audiences love good stories just look at The Dark Knight.  Hopefully we’ll be seeing you years from now in that case Magnet Man.

Haley will not play Sinestro…dang

Jackie Earle Haley was rumored to be playing the yellow ring carrying Sinestro in the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures film, Green Lantern

Unfortunately the former Watchman has denied the rumors.  Collider reporters spoke with Haley at the Spike TV Scream Awards.  Haley appeared to be confused by the Lantern rumors and said,

“I don’t know anything about it yet. If something comes up I’ll let you know.”

Haley seemed to be caught off guard by the question and I don’t think one can read to deep into it and think he was hiding something but one can dream.

It would not be terribly surprising for Haley to be in Green Lantern considering his past work for Warner Brothers.  Haley has appeared in Watchmen and is also starring in the DC Comics television adaptation, Human Target to premiere on FOX.

To say that I wouldn’t want Haley in this role would be false.  I would absolutley love to see Haley as Sinestro.  Sinestro was originally Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern’s mentor but turned evil and he is the equivalent to the Green Lantern but uses a yellow ring.

There have also been rumors that Superman would be appearing in the Green Lantern film.  I’m less enthused about this because too often superhero movies fail because they just couldn’t allow one hero or villain the spotlight.

The Green Lantern will be played by Ryan Reynolds (Wolverine) and stay tuned as more casting news comes in for this film.  The film is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release.

Reynolds next film to be released will be Buried and Haley’s will be Shutter Island to be released on Feb 19, 2010.

‘Ghostbusters 3’ might not be as close as once thought according to Venkman

Well, I could have written about Ryan Reynolds dressing in drag for a film.  Yeah, it may have created more traffic than this one but I feel this is a bigger deal and something I care about.  How fitting this story is the one to be done next with a connection just made from the last article to the next.

Bill Murray may not be as signed on to the second sequel to Ghostbusters as fans once thought.  After all this guy is a legend of comedy and currently the only one with a semi-booming career in the world of film.  It doesn’t hurt to have contemporary directors like Anderson and Coppola on speed dial.

According to Digital Spy, Bill Murray recently spoke out to fans about the potential sequel and had this to say, ““Well, I don’t want to do it yet. There’s still no script, it’s just a bunch of talk. It’s just a wish list for someone. Until there is a really good script, I’ll stay home. It has to be a serious script before I leave the house,” Murray Said. He continued, “I’ll believe it when I see it. I saw a guy talking about the end of the world a couple of years ago, and I haven’t seen that either.”

Cinema Blend said that Murray’s comment came off harsh but I just think the classic comedy actor is simply speaking the truth and when a film is barely in the pre-production stages its hard to commit.  I think he doesn’t sound angry or mad about the situation but rather just frustrated that it isn’t happening quicker which I think is a great thing because he wouldn’t have frustration if he didn’t care at all.

His comparison to the old guy speculating on the end of the world, I think he was just using some of that famous Murray dry humor.  I appreciate Murray’s seriousness to the project and I think he believes that unless the story is there it shouldn’t and doesn’t need to be made.  It’s good to see that one of the four original Ghostbusters is so interested enough to care about the end result of a film.

If you’re looking for some more Murray fun, I recommend Groundhog Day, Stripes and of course Ghostbusters.  Murray can currently be seen in the film, Zombieland and will next appear in Fantastic Mr. Fox on Nov. 25 and Get Low.
